Yes, it goes to 11 because I'm just that awesome, and it does have a zero because some things just don't deserve any "points".
There is also a negative one category for things that shouldn't exist; like necrophiliac tentacle rape Hentai, which I hope to never see because, of course, it cannot be unseen! I fear Rule 34...
Bias
Am I baised? Yes, everyone is, and it has nothing to do with race, gender, or ethnicity. I mean general preferences for story types folks.
For example I am far less likely to watch a Moe cooking show than I am to watch a Shonen action title. And if I did, the chances of me really liking the Moe show are fairly low.
This isn't to say Moe shows are bad; it means I don't like them. So if I rate your favorite show badly, remember it's my opinion.
That and I'm going to take that into consideration and say something like "add a point or two if you're really into Moe and shows about cooking".
As to specific biases, I am 31 years old, meaning I'm an adult and I'm male.
This means I'm probably going to like stuff that has gore and violence in it more than a girl might. And since I'm not a child I can watch anything that I want.
As a man I tend to be more forgiving of fan-service, and even light Ecchi. However Hentai doesn't do much for me, especially since so much of it is depraved, so I'm not likely to review that kind of stuff.
Besides that I also like more mature stories and characters, not always, but in general. So I'm probably not going to watch things like Hello Kitty, Pokemon or a whole lot of high-school girl Shojo stuff or Maho Shojo (although I do like some Shojo titles).
Minor Harem stuff is ok, but things like Tenchi Muyo aren't really interesting to me. Shows like that are more of an offshoot of the Eroge visual novel phenomenon in Japan anyway.
Romance is fine, I just prefer if there is that the pairing stories are more straightforward if that's where it's going; for example Jinto and Lafiel in Crest of the Stars or Saber and Shirou in Fate stay/night.
I will also say I'm not real big on the gratuitious use of Big Mecha, not that I never like those shows, I just don't always get into that. Just wait until I review Evangelion...
Furthermore I like serious High-Fantasy (Tolkien, Lodoss War, Twelve Kingdoms "Epics") which can also include historical fantasy (which is usually set in Feudal Japan in Anime),
Steampunk (Steamboy, Last Exile) and good Science Fiction (Star Trek, Crest/Banner of the Stars, Captain Tylor, "Space Opera") stories; however I do also like comedies in those generes as well (Slayers, Rune Soldier, Captain Tylor, and Nadesico being excellent examples).
Although those genres are my "core", the fun with Anime is that there are plenty of odd (and downright bizzare) genres that one can find things they wouldn't ever consider liking until they watched it.
In general though I tend to look for things in those three "big" categories, and when I find good examples of them I tend to maybe like them more than your average Anime viewer.
And then of course there's the issue of Subs or Dubs. Certainly in the past when Anime first began to be dubbed some dubs were pretty terrible, and some still are. However in general most dubs today are as good or sometimes better than the Japanese. In general I watch the Dubs.
It's not that I dislike the original Japanese, it is just what I prefer. For one thing I find subtitles sometimes detract from the visual experience (for example, for me trying to watch Gankutsuou subbed is painful).
About the only time I watch subs over a dub is when the dub is just horrible or it terribly distorts the intended meaning of a show. And yes there are shows like that for me (Legend of Crystania I'm looking at you).
What this means is that almost all of my reviews are based on the dub version. It also means I have a reverse bias of the reviews that tend to go something like this "someone forced me to listen to it dubbed, even though I clearly hate dubs, and of course it was terrible because they're never good".
Generally speaking I'm pretty ambivalent as long as a competent translation is presented somehow. Basically this means unless there's just something really wrong (or really right) about the English dub, subtitles, or the Seiyuu, I'm probably not going to comment on it much anyway.
Another thing I should mention is relative age of an Anime show doesn't mean much to me. I'm not one of these people that is going to dump on a show because it's old. I'm not going to watch Space Battleship Yamato and expect it to have very much in common with Crest of the Stars, either in artwork or story.
Animation technology and demographics change, but that doesn't mean that old things are inferior. It infuriates me to no end when someone won't give a title (be it Anime, Movies, Music, Books) a chance simply because it wasn't made in the last couple of years. Old with pretty obviously bad animation, story, or characters is just as bad as new with the same problems.
Furthermore, while CGI and digital coloring and inbetween work is great these days, there's something to be said for traditional hand-drawn and hand-colored cel animation.
The fact is I like a lot of older shows precisely because the demographics have changed and I prefer some of the older themes and animation styles you don't see much of anymore.
Lets face it, Anime commands a following from a younger and far more international demographic than it did 16 or so years ago. Shows from when Anime was more of a Japanese and east Asian phenomenon, and one that was dominated by young Japanese men, were far different than today.
The older shows tended to deal with more raw and violent action as well as generally older characters and often more realistic character designs (non-Kawaii). I mean, I can't imagine shows like Ninja Scroll or Dirty Pair being made today without the characters being much younger and the violence being backed down a notch.
So what if the older shows are for a non-demographic today? Maybe it's because I'm older and from that generation. However, my only concern is if I like a show or not; I don't care about what's popular now.
In any case I will always add the original release date of a show in my reviews and if they're really old I'll mention it so those of you with a bias against older shows can steer clear.
So, that's just where I gravitate. Now you know. Therefore, as I said earlier although I may rank something with an obvious bias, I will make a concerted effort in the review to inform the reader of that fact. If you actually read this then you'll be even better informed. Thank you.
